Sonnet #1: “Penumbra”

The knowledge of you, a few blocks away
in an office building, casting your bleak
shadow on my bus route every day,
inserting your darkness into my week,

another subject I try to ignore
as I go about my routine business,
like mortality or nuclear war,
I have been practicing indifference

to hideous, inevitable things
that lay beyond my power to prevent:
a flash of sunlight from your wedding ring,
the sound of my head hitting the cement,

this dim awareness hiding in my chest,
that I am still the one who knows you best.
